About Toyota Material Handling
The roots of Toyota Material Handling U.S.A. stretch back to 1956 when Toyota proper released its first forklift, the 1-ton (0.9-metric-ton) Model LA. The company then went on to establish its first United States forklift dealership in 1967. Toyota continued to innovate in the space, which resulted in a 3-ton (2.72-metric-ton) diesel model with Toyota Industrial engine in 1973, its first electric forklift in 1975, the 5-series electric forklift in 1991, and the 6-series in 1995. In 1990, the company established its Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing facility in Columbus, Indiana, where it continues to assemble forklifts to this day.
