Dieci ICARUS & APOLLO Telehandlers Assist German Fire & Rescue Teams
Telehandlers are versatile, as construction crews are well aware, but emergency service providers demonstrate all kinds of novel uses for the powerful machines. As examples, Dieci reported on a couple of its telehandlers’ service with German firefighters and relief workers.
Dieci ICARUS 40.14
THW, the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief, uses the Dieci ICARUS 40.14 in its efforts around the country. It recently held a joint exercise with a fire department in Sondershausen, Thuringia, to simulate an emergency evacuation of area residents and their belongings.
Volunteer feedback on the ICARUS 40.14 was very positive. The telehandler reportedly performed very well during the exercise, shoveling rubble and moving heavy objects. The workers also used the machine to transport people in its raised basket. Some personnel are currently taking courses on how to drive the telehandler to be prepared for future operations and exercises.
The ICARUS 40.14 is a 112-horsepower (83.5-kilowatt) telehandler with a 43.3-foot (13.2-meter) maximum lifting height. It’s rated at an 8,351-pound (3,788-kilogram) maximum lifting capacity.
APOLLO 25.6
Meanwhile, a Dieci APOLLO 25.6 fixed-boom telehandler is serving at the fire station in Buchloe, Bavaria. It has a sealed-cabin ventilation system, which has let it venture into dangerous situations rife with smoke and flames in order to put out fires.
The Buchloe fire station has used its four-wheel-drive APOLLO 25.6 to reach damaged chimneys and rooftops, as well as to clear away wreckage from vehicle accident scenes. The telehandler also proved adept at cleaning up oil and fuel spills on the road. And in true firefighter fashion, it has even rescued animals stranded by flooding.
The APOLLO 25.6 R is a compact model with a 5,512-pound (2,500-kilogram) lifting capacity. It can lift to a maximum of 19 feet (5.78 meters), and it’s powered by a 49-horsepower (36.5-kilowatt) Kubota diesel engine.
