Kalmar AutoStrad Straddle Carriers Now Support Automated Truck Handling
Kalmar has introduced its ATH (Automated Truck Handling) feature to its AutoStrad family of straddle carrier forklifts. This allows midsized and large container terminals to implement an autonomous means by which to move shipping containers from quay cranes to trucks. Besides reducing labor costs and increasing safety, Kalmar says, the AutoStrad with ATH provides terminals with the equipment flexibility to automate with low risk in a short period of time.
“We are pleased to introduce this feature for our horizontal transportation offering,” says Henrik Häggblom, Kalmar’s VP of Horizontal Transportation Solutions. The company previously made ATH available for its yard cranes.
Electric Eyes
Kalmar’s ATH uses a Truck Lane Measurement System to ascertain the truck’s dimensions and position, as well as available container spots. A camera system aids in the placement of the container on the truck.
“By automating the final step of landside operations in an AutoStrad terminal, we are now able to move people away from the truck interchange areas,” says Häggblom. “This helps terminals improve their safety and provides flexibility by enabling 24/7 operations.”
