Kalmar is set to deliver four Kalmar Eco Reachstackers to the Matrans Rotterdam Terminal in the Port of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The new machines, scheduled to arrive in Q2 of this year, will bring Matrans’ total number of Ecos to nine. The logistics provider expects to save an estimated 100,000 Euros on fuel each year by replacing older, less energy-efficient machines.

    Ecologically Logical

“Our existing fleet of Kalmar Eco Reachstackers has been instrumental in helping us to cut emissions at the terminal and achieve a significant reduction in fuel costs,” says Matrans Managing Director Roelf Buist. “Adding additional machines of the same type was therefore a relatively straightforward decision, especially considering the excellent relationship we have built with the Kalmar services team.”

Kalmar is providing the Eco units to Matrans with its Complete Care maintenance service. The terminal operator has a background in forest products, project and breakbulk cargo, and short-sea container transport.

“The Kalmar Eco Reachstacker is a prime example of our commitment to develop solutions that help customers to minimise their environmental impact while continuously improving their productivity,” says Kalmar Vice President West and South Europe, Dave Patterson. “As well as demonstrating a high level of satisfaction with the machines, this order also reflects the excellent work of our service team on the ground.”

    The Kalmar Eco

Kalmar says that its Eco Reachstacker is as productive as older equipment, yet up to 40% more fuel-efficient. Compared to more recent reach stackers, the Eco provides up to 25% better fuel economy. Its engine options are made by Volvo and are rated at up to EU Stage V. Kalmar also touts the Eco’s new joystick, lower noise level, and smoother, faster acceleration. The reach stacker supports the Kalmar Insight performance management tool and the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)-compliant Kalmar Load Measurement System.

The Eco comes in 50-ton (45-metric-ton) capacity models for container yard, container barge, and intermodal rail handling. The container models can stack up to five or six units high with a 49- to 59-foot (15- to 18-meter) lift height. Outreach for the container stackers is 3 to 4 rows deep. The Eco is also available in industrial tool carrier-handling models of up to 66 tons (60 metric tons) capacity and industrial lift hook-handling models of up to 77 tons (70 metric tons).
