Genie Producing Thousands Of Protective Face Shields For Seattle-Area Hospital Workers In Fight Against COVID-19
Genie began manufacturing protective face shields this week at its Redmond, Washington, headquarters. The lift company says it will provide the shields to medical workers at the Seattle-area Overlake Medical Center hospital to assist in the fight against the novel coronavirus. Jim Donaldson, Genie engineering design manager, started the initiative by creating a face shield design after he viewed a video concerning hospitals’ need for personal protection equipment. Genie, a Terex brand and maker of boom lifts, scissor lifts, aerial work platforms, telehandlers, and other equipment, is receiving assistance from Allegis Corporation, a longtime supplier that’s sourcing materials for the face shields.
A Sponge, Bungee Cord & Plastic Tube
Genie initially plans to produce 4,000 to 5,000 face shields for Overlake Medical Center. Depending on availability of material and the need, Genie may produce more later on. Donaldson’s original design incorporated a sponge, bungee cord, and a plastic tube he purchased at a local store. Besides face shields, Genie has also created a process for manufacturing face coverings using material the hospital provides. Additionally, Genie is using its 3D-printing abilities to manufacture custom parts that are enabling critical hospital PPE to re-enter service.
“I am proud of, but not surprised by, the initiative and innovation of our team members,” says Genie President Matt Fearon. “They heard about a critical need, and they didn’t hesitate to step up to the challenge—they focused on finding solutions, and they acted quickly because they knew the need was urgent.” Fearon also notes that Genie’s team in China air-shipped 1,000 N95 masks as the United States was experiencing a severe shortage.
