JLG’s ClearSky Smart Fleet Wireless Management Platform Answers 'Where’s My Machine?'

Aerial lift and telehandler manufacturer JLG is currently rolling out a new wireless fleet management platform with user-friendly features and better connectivity—even when cellular data and Wi-Fi are not available. Its ClearSky Smart Fleet system, a standard feature on new JLG machines, uses Internet of Things (IoT)-style interconnectivity among machines to provide status, performance, and diagnostic data through a mobile app, an online portal, or third-party telematics systems using an advanced application programming interface (API). In addition, the color-changing light and audible alerts from a roof-mounted beacon on each machine help supervisors in the field identify which unit is which, which needs attention, and so on.

“ClearSky Smart Fleet is a bold, new frontier in fleet connectivity,” says Ara Eckel, director of product management for JLG’s connected solutions. “It’s a true, two-way fleet management and communication platform that turns yesterday’s one-way data transmission into two-way interactivity that gets JLG equipment fleets talking like never before.”

    Mobile App Features

JLG says ClearSky Smart Fleet includes 25 unique features so far, including analyzers, telematics, and productivity applications, with more on the way. Using the mobile app on a smartphone or tablet to communicate with each machine’s beacon, a user can locate an asset, check its operating status and performance data, run diagnostics, and much more.

“With ClearSky Smart Fleet, equipment owners and operators can light a specific machine’s beacon or honk its horn with the tap of a screen,” says Eckel. The color of a beacon can alert a supervisor to a machine with a trouble code, low fuel level, ignition or battery problem, and more at a glance. The app can provide relevant parts information and technical manuals for troubleshooting purposes; it will soon also be able to generate downloadable and shareable machine summaries.

The app and ClearSky Smart Fleet’s web portal can let an authorized user set a machine’s lockout, creep, and other restrictions to prevent unauthorized use.

The ClearSky Smart Fleet Web Portal

For ease of entry, JLG allows the equipment owner or manager to log into the ClearSky Smart Fleet web portal as a single sign-on using their existing credentials for JLG's Online Express e-commerce service. “Equipment owners and operators can manage a fleet, troubleshoot machine issues, and order parts—everything they need to keep a fleet in top shape—with a single login,” Eckel says.

The configurable ClearSky Smart Fleet portal can be rearranged and refined to display the fleet or individual machine data the user requires at the moment, including knowledge articles and schematics. “Whether a fleet view or individual model view is wanted, powerful filters and tailored customization, including drag-and-drop window widgets, allow any role to prioritize the actionable insights necessary to maximize productivity and ROI (return on investment),” says Eckel. Reports and overviews can be exported as PDF or spreadsheet files.

New JLG machines with ClearSky Smart Fleet beacons will soon be able to detect one another and form a Site Network. “Site Networks act like automated geofences,” says Eckel, “when two or more machines are within range of a local connection, a site network is formed automatically, simplifying equipment tracking and reporting.”

    Advanced API

JLG also offers ClearSky Smart Fleet data through an API, so you can plug it into your company’s existing telematics/fleet management solution, enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, or custom portal.

“Our next-generation IoT platform offers an integrated, enhanced data feed to combine actionable, JLG-rich data into our customers’ in-house solution to manage their entire mixed fleet from a single screen, maximizing efficiencies and improving ROI,” says Eckel.
