Telehandler Market Trends Show Inventory Increases Driving Down Auction Values
The newest market reports for used telehandlers in Sandhills Global’s U.S. marketplaces indicate steady inventory growth. According to the May 2024 reports, this used telehandler inventory buildup on dealers’ lots is driving auction values lower and producing a growing gap between auction values and retail prices.

“We’ve seen a roughly 40% increase in inventory across the market year over year,” says Sterup. This is “driving down auction values, with auction values down roughly 13.5% year over year. Anytime that inventory starts to spike, it’s going to cause a big shift as far as values go, and we’re seeing that here today.”
“This chart shows us the top five manufacturers in the telehandler category and how they’ve been performing during the same time period,” says Sterup. “So you can see, starting in 2020 when COVID hit, what happened to inventory levels. It really plummeted well into 2022.”
In 2022, “we bottomed out as far as inventory goes, and we really started to see a steady incline of inventory back into the marketplace since then,” says Sterup. “Since then auction values have dropped at a pretty steady decline and were down almost 14% year over year in May, but retail values are decreasing at a slower rate, which is creating a bubble between auction and retail values.”
