Manlifts, also called “cherry pickers,” “aerial work platforms” (AWPs), “aerial lifts,” or “mobile elevated work platforms” (MEWPs), give one or two people safe vertical and sometimes horizontal access to work areas high above ground level.
Read More (About Manlifts)The term “manlift” is a catch-all phrase used to describe various mechanical lifting equipment to help a person (or two) work on areas high above the ground or floor. With a platform or bucket, safety rails, and a lifting mechanism powered by hydraulics, electricity, or gas, a manlift provides a safer alternative to using a ladder or scaffolding.
Also known as “cherry pickers,” “aerial work platforms” (AWPs), or—more accurately—"aerial lifts” or “mobile elevated work platforms” (MEWPs), manlifts come in different designs with varied capabilities. We’ll discuss each of the main types here, so you can feel confident about choosing the right lift for the job.
While “manlift” is a general term, the industry recognizes a variety of distinct machines that fall under this umbrella. Each has its own strengths and common use cases, from indoor maintenance to rugged construction work.
Scissor lifts provide vertical elevation, moving a railed work platform straight up and down using a cross-braced, scissor-like support system. They offer large platform areas and high load capacities, making them ideal for tasks requiring multiple workers, heavy tools, or bulky materials. Many can be driven, albeit slowly, with their platform elevated.
Boom lifts feature a hydraulic arm that allows both vertical and horizontal movement, so the user can maneuver the work platform (also called a “basket,” “cage,” or “bucket”) forward and to either side as well as upward. The vertical height and horizontal outreach of these versatile machines make them especially useful for maneuvering over and around obstacles and accessing hard-to-reach areas.

Vertical mast lifts are compact, single-mast machines designed to provide straight-up, overhead access on flat, hard surfaces. Vertical mast lifts have a small footprint, use zero-emission electric power, and fit in tight spaces where larger boom lifts and scissor lifts can't fit. These features, combined with the ability to roll through standard doorways or between production lines, make this type of lift a popular choice for quick and safe elevation for a single worker using light tools and materials.
