    About Manlifts

The term “manlift” is a catch-all phrase used to describe various mechanical lifting equipment to help a person (or two) work on areas high above the ground or floor. With a platform or bucket, safety rails, and a lifting mechanism powered by hydraulics, electricity, or gas, a manlift provides a safer alternative to using a ladder or scaffolding.

Also known as “cherry pickers,” “aerial work platforms” (AWPs), or—more accurately—"aerial lifts” or “mobile elevated work platforms” (MEWPs), manlifts come in different designs with varied capabilities. We’ll discuss each of the main types here, so you can feel confident about choosing the right lift for the job.

    Types Of Manlifts

While “manlift” is a general term, the industry recognizes a variety of distinct machines that fall under this umbrella. Each has its own strengths and common use cases, from indoor maintenance to rugged construction work.

    Scissor Lifts

Scissor lifts provide vertical elevation, moving a railed work platform straight up and down using a cross-braced, scissor-like support system. They offer large platform areas and high load capacities, making them ideal for tasks requiring multiple workers, heavy tools, or bulky materials. Many can be driven, albeit slowly, with their platform elevated.

    Common Scissor Lift Uses

    • Warehouse stocking
    • Light replacement
    • Maintenance and cleaning
    • HVAC installation and repair

    Types Of Scissor Lifts

    • Slab scissor lifts are best for flat, indoor surfaces. Most are quiet, emission-free electric models, so they can be used where air quality and noise levels are concerns.
    • Rough-terrain scissor lifts are typically diesel-powered with all-terrain tires for outdoor use, including on slopes and uneven ground.

    Boom Lifts

Boom lifts feature a hydraulic arm that allows both vertical and horizontal movement, so the user can maneuver the work platform (also called a “basket,” “cage,” or “bucket”) forward and to either side as well as upward. The vertical height and horizontal outreach of these versatile machines make them especially useful for maneuvering over and around obstacles and accessing hard-to-reach areas.

    Common Boom Lift Uses

    • Tree trimming and pruning
    • Gym and auditorium light replacement
    • Urban construction
    • Building maintenance
    • Window washing
    • High-rise construction
    • Holiday and event decorating
    • Electrical service
    • HVAC maintenance
    • Stadium work
    • Landscaping
    • High-ceiling indoor jobs

    Types Of Boom Lifts

    • Articulating boom lifts (knuckle booms) have multiple hinged joints in the arm, allowing them to maneuver over and around obstacles. These are great for tree trimming, electrical work, and urban construction jobs.
    • Telescopic boom lifts (stick booms) extend in a straight line for maximum horizontal reach and lift capacity. These are best for building maintenance, window washing, and high-rise construction.
    • Towable boom lifts are tow-behind units with articulating arms. They are easy to transport and ideal for light-duty or residential tasks. Towable lifts are commonly used for holiday decorating, residential tree work, and light maintenance tasks.
    • Tracked articulating boom lifts (spider lifts) have extendable stabilizer legs and low ground pressure, allowing them to operate on rough, sloped, or soft terrain where traditional wheeled lifts would create ruts or get stuck. Lightweight and compact, spider lifts operate on battery or hybrid power. They’re great for stadium work, landscaping and tree care, and high-ceiling indoor jobs.

    Vertical Mast Lifts

Vertical mast lifts are compact, single-mast machines designed to provide straight-up, overhead access on flat, hard surfaces. Vertical mast lifts have a small footprint, use zero-emission electric power, and fit in tight spaces where larger boom lifts and scissor lifts can't fit. These features, combined with the ability to roll through standard doorways or between production lines, make this type of lift a popular choice for quick and safe elevation for a single worker using light tools and materials.

    Common Vertical Lift Uses

    • Facility maintenance and repairs
    • Overhead electrical and cabling work
    • HVAC and plumbing inspections
    • Changing lights and signage
    • Inventory counts and stock checks
    • Placing banners and high-level decor
    • Retail store organization and resets
    • Event setup and audiovisual rigging
    • Painting and touch-up

    Types Of Vertical Lifts

    • Personnel lifts, or one-man lifts, are self-propelled units with a single telescoping mast, which elevates one operator and a small tool load. A narrow chassis allows personnel lifts to be driven down hallways or between machinery.
    • Push-around vertical lifts have lightweight platforms that the operator manually pushes into position and then levels with outriggers before use. These are ideal for maintenance tasks where floor loading or budget constraints rule out heavier self-propelled models.
    • Order pickers (stock picker lifts) elevate a warehouse employee along with an attached load deck or forks. They allow the user to pick individual items from shelves rather than having to bring down an entire pallet with a forklift.

    How To Choose A Manlift

Before selecting a manlift, consider these questions:

    • Will the lift be used indoors or outdoors?
    • Is the ground flat, sloped, or uneven?
    • Do you need horizontal outreach, or just vertical access?
    • What is the required working height?
    • What is the total load (people + tools and materials)?
    • Are there space restrictions (doorways, aisles)?
    • Is there a weight restriction (elevators, suspended floors)?
    • What’s your budget or rental timeframe?

Answering these will help narrow down your options to the most appropriate lift for your job.
