Shipping container lift manufacturer and port automation giant Kalmar has agreed to provide European global logistics provider Cabooter Group with a fully electric reach stacker by 2021.

"The main driver behind our decision to adopt the Kalmar Electric Reachstacker solution is the need to reduce the noise and airborne emissions that our equipment generates,” says Cabooter president Hans Cabooter. “This is especially important at our Kaldenkirchen terminal because it is in the center of the city, where there are clearly defined limits for these emissions."

Cabooter is already using five fuel-efficient Kalmar Tier 4 Final/Stage IV emissions standards-compliant diesel Eco Reachstackers at its hubs in Venlo in the southeastern Netherlands and Kaldenkirchen, Germany. When ready, the all-electric version will be put to work at the Venlo hub.

    Creating Electric Options

Kalmar is developing the Electric Reachstacker around advanced lithium-ion battery technology. Reach stackers are one of the few types of lifts the company doesn’t yet offer in a completely electric version.

"We firmly believe that electricity is the power source of the future and have committed to making our full portfolio available as electrically powered by 2021,” says Kalmar’s vice president of counterbalanced container handlers, Seppo Heino.

Kalmar has already debuted fully electric versions of its light and medium forklifts, its empty container handlers, its shuttle and straddle carriers, its AGVs (automated guided vehicles), the Ottawa terminal tractor, and its yard cranes.

“We are delighted to announce this agreement with Cabooter Group, who share our vision of a more sustainable future for the cargo handling and logistics industries," Heino says.

    Kalmar Lifts

Besides its Eco Reachstackers, Kalmar makes Logstacker timber handlers and handlers for empty and loaded shipping containers. The company has also manufactured pneumatic tire forklifts, cushion tire lift trucks, electric forklifts, masted container handlers, straddle carriers, shuttle carriers, side loaders / bi-directionals, and terminal tractors (as Kalmar Ottawa), as well as various cranes. It also sells FastCharge AGVs and the container handling ASC (Automated Stacking Crane).
