    About Articulating Boom Lifts

An articulating boom lift is a versatile type of aerial lift, or mobile elevated work platform (MEWP). This type of lift was previously known as an aerial work platform (AWP), but MEWP is the current industry standard encompassing all equipment designed to lift personnel up to higher work areas.

Articulating boom lifts give workers a highly maneuverable way to safely access areas several stories above ground level, even if there are obstacles in the way. They extend their work platforms by unfolding their hinged booms, as you might straighten your arm and finger to point at something, which is why these jointed lifts are also called knuckle boom lifts.

Common Uses For Articulated Boom Lifts

Because of the flexibility of their joints, or knuckles, articulated boom lifts can maneuver a basket, cage, or bucket into tight spaces, around corners, and between ceiling joists indoors. They can even reach over or under obstacles such as tree branches, structural beams, walls, and overhead utility lines. This versatility makes them indispensable in a variety of challenging work environments.

Common uses for these dexterous MEWPs include tree trimming, replacing lights, doing HVAC work, painting, cleaning out rain gutters, and more. Articulated boom lifts are available in self-propelled models with wheels or tracks and towable versions on trailers.

    Articulating Boom Lift Advantages

The ability to reach up and over obstacles and approach the work from different angles sets articulated lifts apart from telescopic boom lifts. The latter, also called “straight booms,” extend their platforms straight outward by sliding out sections of the boom like a collapsible telescope.

While telescopic boom lifts offer longer reach and greater lift capacities, articulating lifts’ multiple pivot points give workers access to areas a straight boom simply can’t reach. Knuckle booms also allow painters or cleaners to more efficiently move the bucket, man basket, or cage around the work without having to drive the lift to a new position.

Other Names For Articulating Boom Lifts

Articulating boom lifts are known by various terms related to their designs and applications. In addition to “knuckle boom lift” mentioned above, common terms include cherry picker, basket lift, and articulating man lift. Those designed with very high reach may be termed atrium lifts.

Models with stabilizer outriggers are often called spider lifts because of how they look when their outriggers are extended; these are typically tracked models but may have wheels.

Rental companies, manufacturers, and tree care specialists may refer to compact articulating boom lifts designed for residential settings as backyard lifts, backyard carriers, or backyard bucket lifts.

Specifications To Look For In An Articulating Boom Lift

There are three primary specifications to pay attention to when you’re selecting an articulating boom lift. These describe how high and far it can reach, as well as how much it can lift:

    • Vertical platform height - maximum height of the work platform floor
    • Horizontal outreach - maximum horizontal distance the platform can extend from the machine
    • Lift capacity - maximum total weight the platform can safely hold, including workers, tools, and materials

A modestly sized example is the Manitou ATJ 46 articulated lift, which has a maximum platform height of 46 feet (14 meters) and a horizontal outreach or side reach of 27.25 ft (8.3 m). The ATJ 46’s fairly typical lift capacity of 500 pounds (227 kilograms) is enough to elevate one or two workers and their tools.

The Genie Z-80/60 offers greater working heights up to 84 ft (25.6 m) and more side reach at 60 ft (18.3 m), albeit with the same 500-lb platform capacity. (Note that manufacturers provide either platform height, which is how high the floor of the work platform is above the ground, or working height, which adds 6 ft (1.8 m) or so to account for the height of the operator standing on it.)

Further up the range are high-reach models that add telescoping boom sections to an articulated design. This is how the JLG 1500AJP attains an impressive platform height of 150 ft (45.7 m) and horizontal outreach of 75 ft (22.9 m). The powerful 1500AJP can also lift 1,000 lbs (454 kg).

    Articulating Boom Lift Power Options

Like other kinds of lifts and cranes, articulated boom lifts come with different types of power sources to run their hydraulic systems, drive motors, and control systems. Each power option has pros and cons. Depending on the model, articulating boom lift power sources include:

    • Electric batteries or onsite power for emissions-free, quiet use, even indoors
    • Internal-combustion engine fueled by diesel, gasoline, propane, compressed natural gas (CNG), and/or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for robust but outdoor-only power with rapid refueling capability
    • Hybrid power system that automatically uses both electric power and a small engine’s power at the same time for energy efficiency and reduced emissions
    • Bi-energy system that the operator can switch between electric power for indoor work and a full-sized engine for outdoor jobs and moving the lift around a jobsite

    Articulating Boom Lifts Drive Systems

Self-propelled articulated boom lifts come with various drive systems, namely:

    • Two-wheel-drive (2WD) with wheels
    • Four-wheel-drive (4WD) with wheels (user selectable between 2WD and 4WD)
    • All-wheel-drive (AWD) with wheels (automatically switches between 2WD and 4WD)
    • Tracks

Wheeled models may run on pneumatic tires, foam-filled tires, or solid rubber wheels. Some boom lift tires have off-road tread patterns for better traction while crossing mud, snow, or broken ground.

Flotation-style tires can help a boom lift on loose surfaces like sand and can minimize damage to soft terrain and delicate turf. Boom lifts with tracks also do well on softer ground, especially if the tracks are wider and designed to lower the machine’s ground pressure.

Also, some crawler boom lifts have a retractable undercarriage, so they can make their track width narrower to fit through gates, doors, elevators, and other entryways, or wider for greater stability during a lift. For example, the Skylift Mini Arborist MA 53’s width is 35 in. (88.9 cm) with its tracks retracted, and 51 in. (129.5 cm) with its tracks fully extended.
